Llangollen plays its part in 2008 Capital of Culture success
December 2007
Up to 50 of the best young musicians in Europe will descend on Llangollen as the town plays its part in Liverpool’s Capital of Culture success.
The talented youngsters will be staying in the town from mid November for around five weeks to rehearse a rare opera that will be performed in Liverpool’s St George’s Hall on New Year’s Eve.
Called Emilia Di Liverpool, the opera was written by Gaetano Donizetti over 100 years ago and will kick-off an incredible 12 months as the city embarks on its year as Europe’s cultural focal point.
During their stay in Llangollen the musicians will be inviting schoolchildren and members of the public to a series of workshops to discover more about opera, as well as a final dress rehearsal where they’ll be able to witness the production in all its glory.
Rehearsals will be based at the Royal International Pavilion, which is home to the Llangollen International Eisteddfod and arts events and concerts throughout the year.
Pavilion manager Carol Evans said: “We’re delighted the European Opera Centre has decided to come to Llangollen to rehearse Emilia Di Liverpool.
“It’s great to see Llangollen playing a part in Liverpool’s success as Capital of Culture and we’re looking forward to welcoming the cast and crew.
“This is a chance to witness the birth of a rare opera and to hear some of Europe’s most talented young musicians.”
